Mission Statement:
Changing ourselves to make change in our world. Our mission is to raise up need-meeters, problem-solvers, and innovators to make a difference in our world. We help one another grow to be well-rounded individuals, and while doing this we are doing good in our community by helping other people. In this movement, we are helping the youth make changes in themselves and giving them the opportunity to come up with changes for our city.
Considering the centrality of youth leadership in every movement to transform society, Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Development (LEAD) became an important part of Reconstruction’s initiatives. Skill-building efforts have included facilitating group discussions, managing interpersonal conflicts, and thinking critically about the problems that plague our communities and lead to incarceration. Through participation in LEAD, young people are politicized and empowered to effect healthy social change within their communities.
Mark King, Chair of LEAD
Mark King was born and raised in North Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School. In 2011, a gunshot wound to the head left him blind. While still in the hospital, he was arrested because of the life he was living and later sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. In 2012 Mark became a Christian and from that moment his life took a 180° turn. He began to walk with God, live differently, and take steps to become a better person. In 2019 when he was released from prison, Mark began to carry out the calling that God had on his life to share the love of Jesus with all people. He now serves as the Chair of L.E.A.D and helps men and women who are involved in the streets get out of that life and see there is much more to live for.
